Pick up some supplies. Buy paper doilies that you can use to put on a dessert plate under a piece of cake or a pretty pastry. Pick up half a dozen small coffee cups if you don’t already have some. Teacups and saucers, which used to be so much a part of a household, are wonderful for coffee parties. If possible, have a set of these on hand. They are well worth the pleasure you will get from drinking out of them. Get a special coffee and some flavored creams for the coffee.

Now for the desserts. Here are some simple desserts you can whip up on your own that look like they took hours. Chill wineglasses. Buy a pound cake at the local grocery stores and cut it into bite sized pieces. Also buy two flavors of ice cream. Before the guests arrive, put a layer of the ice cream and pound cake in the chilled glasses and leave them in the freezer until they are ready to serve.

You can buy fresh pastries at the bakery and add your own touches in presentation. You can buy frozen desserts and let them thaw during the day and pre-slice it before the guests arrive.
